The ABCs of Avoiding a Custody Battle

2 Things You Can Do To Get A Good Custody Agreement

by Barry Webb

No matter how cordial your divorce may be, it's never going to be an easy thing to have to deal with. This is especially true when it comes to kids. When you have kids, you are going to need to make sure that you and your ex-spouse are keeping your children's best interests in mind. That means that you need to have attorneys help you write up a good custody agreement. So, what are some things that you need to make sure that you have a good custody agreement?

Write it Down

One of the things that is going to make sure that you have a good custody agreement is making sure that you have it written down and agreed to and signed by both you and your former spouse. That way no one can say that they were unaware of what the custody agreement said. If there is some problem in the future, you can refer back to the written agreement and use it to solve any issues.

Be Willing to Compromise

Even in a friendly divorce and custody situation, you and your former spouse may have some disagreements over what the exact custody arrangements are going to be. You may want to have certain things and your spouse may want to have certain things as well. Those things may overlap, which could cause some problems. You are going to have to be willing to compromise so that everything can go smoothly. The important thing to remember in this situation is that the only winners and losers in this situation are going to be your children, and you and your former spouse both want the best for your kids. So, before you go into negotiations, you should give your lawyer a few lists of things. One list should be the things that you absolutely feel you must have in a custody agreement. Another list should be those things that you would like to have but are willing to let your spouse have, and a third should be the things that don't matter to you at all. Your lawyer will do their best to make sure that your agreement covers the things that you feel you must have.

Divorces and child custody arrangements are never going to be easy. You should always have an attorney that can help you make get the arrangements that you want for both your divorce and any custody agreements.
