The ABCs of Avoiding a Custody Battle

Signs That You Are Being Discriminated At Work Because Of Your Age

by Barry Webb

Age discrimination can be difficult to prove, but that doesn't mean it is impossible. When you are not feeling comfortable at your job and you feel that you are facing difficulty because of your age, it's time to take a step back and look at your situation. While there are times that it is obvious you are looked down on because of your age, you will have to pay attention to what is going on around you. If you have a great employment history but suddenly start getting written up as you near retirement age, this can be a sign that you are being discriminated against because of your age.

You are Getting Harassed

If you feel uncomfortable because of an age-related joke at work, this could border on harassment. When you state that you don't appreciate the humor but it continues, this is harassment. There are times when you will have direct evidence that your age is the reason you are being bothered at work. For example, if you are called the "old man" or "grandpa", and told to get moving, this is age-related. Note the date and time of the comment and keep track of any further similar events if it continues.

You are Suddenly Disciplined

Employees who are with a company for a long time tend to be the highest wage earners. If you have been with a company for decades with a wonderful track record and you are suddenly written up all the time, this is suspicious at best. When your employer is trying to get rid of you because of your age, you will find that you are treated differently than you used to be. Your track record with the company speaks for itself. If you are driven out of your job after years of service, it's time to consider meeting with an age discrimination law attorney.

You are Never Promoted

When you are a good worker but you are always looked over for a promotion, it's time to wonder why. If your bosses are getting younger and younger yet you stay at the same job, you may be being discriminated against because of your age.

Discrimination at work can happen for a number of reasons. Age discrimination involves being treated harshly because of your age, being harassed, or being overlooked for a promotion because you are close to retirement age. Speak with an age discrimination law attorney to see if you have a strong case against your former employer today.
