The ABCs of Avoiding a Custody Battle

Is Your Spouse Having An Internet Affair?

by Barry Webb

Not all affairs begin in person; increasingly spouses are finding ways to cheat on their husbands or wives in front of their home computer. Meeting, chatting and then eventually connecting in person using the internet is surprisingly common and easy to accomplish – no need to hang out in seedy bars to have an affair. Unfortunately, internet affairs are more difficult to spot, so read on to learn about 8 warning signs that your spouse is up to no good online.

1. Your spouse seems to be spending more and more time online. It's become commonplace for people to spend more time on the computer, but if you have seen an unusual increase and they seem to be ignoring or forgoing other activities to sit at the p.c., you may have a problem.

2. Has the computer password-protected and refuses to share those passwords with you. While being secure online is important, it should not be the spouse who is left without access to a computer. Some exceptions do exist, such as work-related devices and personal journals, however.

3. Spends time late at night on the computer. Insomnia may be an issue, but staying up very late or rising in the middle of the night to go online should send up warning signals to you that you are dealing more with loneliness than insomnia.

4. Seems nervous when you enter the room while on the computer, often quickly shutting the laptop or turning off the computer to prevent you from seeing the screen.

5. Re-arranging the furniture or the monitor so that the screen faces away for privacy. You spouse should not need to hide the screen from you and if they do you should suspect something is up.

6. A computer that has it's history of sites visited cleared more often than normal could indicate a spouse attempting to cover their tracks online.

7. Gets annoyed or defensive when you try to discuss any of these warning signs of secretive computer use. Spouses who have something to hide will display an exaggerated level of agitation when confronted with issues.

8. If you can access the computer in question, you may find any of the following alarming and a red flag:

  • A browser history that contains links to chat rooms, online dating sites and email programs that you are unfamiliar with.
  • Photos of nude or partially nude people, including your spouse.
  • Emails from unfamiliar people that are entirely too personal and salacious.

It should be noted that, taken singly, none of these signs are a fail-proof indication of an internet affair, but should instead be interpreted that more attention to this matter is needed. For those who are dealing with spouses who cheat and are considering divorce, speak to a divorce law attorney sooner rather than later.
